Passes

Students will receive four science passes per semester to use if they have to leave the classroom for missing materials such as homework, book, workbooks or supplies.  Students will also use these passes if they must leave the classroom to go to the restroom or to make phone calls to parents. When students have used all of their passes or do not have their passes in the room they will not be allowed to leave the room unless there is an emergency. It would be best for student to use their five minute passing period to take care of these needs so that instructional time is not reduced. Students must be in their seat before the tardy bell rings or they will be counted tardy.

Grading

Student Grades

The most important purpose of grades is to COMMUNICATE STUDENT LEARNING!    We need to find a way to make grades more effective and meaningful. Therefore, student grades will be based on a 50/30/20 percentage.

  1.  Summative Grades (Major Assessment Grades)……..…………………………………………… 50%
    1. Unit/Chapter Test
    2. Projects
    3. Any assessment OF learning
    4. 2-4 a grading period
  2.  Formative Grades (Minor Assessment Grades)………………………………………… …………30%
    1. Skills Quiz
    2. Vocabulary/Spelling Test
    3. Mid-Unit Check (Progress Check)
    4. Any assessment FOR learning (monitor students’ progress)
    5. Every 2-3 days?
  3. Daily Grades ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 20%
    1. Homework
    2. Warm-ups/Bell Ringers
    3. Group work/Class work, etc.

Daily/Late Work

Students are encouraged to have all homework assignments completed when they are due. Students will be allowed to turn in late work; however there will be some restrictions. Students will have until the end of the following day in which the work was due to turn in the late work. (Example: Assignment due on Tuesday, student has until end of day Wednesday to turn in late work.) The maximum grade a student can receive for late work is a 70.

Retest

Students will be allowed to retest on any test in which the grade is a 74 or below. Students will have 3 days after the teacher returns the original test within to retest. In order to retest, students are required to attend at least 1 tutorial session agreed upon by the teacher and student. The maximum grade allowed for a retest is a 75. (If a student scores 75-100 on the retest, their grade will be a 75. If they score 74 or below, they receive the grade earned on the retest.)

Absences

It is your responsibility to get any missed assignments.  Check the class table of contents and assignments listed on the board for missed assignments. You are responsible for getting the work and turning it in on time. Students have 3 school days to turn in make-up work. See the student handbook for the policy on absences of more than one day.

Classroom management and discipline procedures

When in my classroom, students must comply with the following rules:

  1. Be courteous to your teacher and fellow classmates
  2. Follow directions the first time they are given
  3. Be in seat, ready to work when the bell rings
  4. Raise hand and wait to be recognized before speaking
  5. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself

First Offense: warning

Second Offense: warning, contact parents

Third Offense: disciplinary referral

If a student is severely disruptive, he or she will be sent immediately to the principal.

Lab Discipline Policy:

The first offense will result in dismissal from the lab due to lab safety concerns.
