Important Notes on Saving Images:
Don't let your computer turn into the "picture drawer"! {You know, the drawer where you dump all your pics, meaning to get them into an album sometime in the next 20 years.} Be organized! Have a folder or set of folders where you save your photos. This is also a must if you are going to use them in a web site(see "Setting Up a Site" for more on this).
Don't EVER save over an original!! Many blondes (including this one) have learned this the hard way -- once you save over a file you can never get the original back. Always save an edited image with a different file name (if the original file name is "dance" then save the changed file as "dance2"). This is a very important habit to cultivate so that you always have the original, just in case you need it.
Hang on to your "Editable" files. Fireworks will only Save images as .png (a Fireworks-specific file). To turn your image into a more universal file type (like .jpg or .gif), you have to Export. A .png is a useful file because it is "editable". This means that if you added some text to a photo (say, someone's name) and then you discover that it has to be changed (say, you had a blonde moment and spelled the name wrong), you can simply go into the .png file, choose the text box and change the name. If the file has already been exported as a .jpg or .gif, you cannot change the text because the whole thing has been "flattened" into one single image.
