Important Notes on Backgrounds:
A background can add a lot to your
web page. Unfortunately, it can add things like unreadable text, distractions
from the content and user headaches. When choosing a background, consider this:
• A background should not be noticed by the user. It should be
something that blends so well with the rest of the site that
it does not stand out on it's own.
• A background is created in a web page by taking very
small image (usually about 1 inch by 1 inch) and "tiling"
the image over and over to cover the page. Always test your background
images on a web page to see what it will look like tiled. Even a fairly simple
image can become overwhelming
when you are looking at hundreds of copies of it! If you just have to have a
crazy background (as
is on this page), then temper it with a solid
table on top so that only part of the background shows (and you don't
give your users a headache).
• You should be able to read text on top of
your background. If you choose a background that has both light and dark colors,
dark text will not show on the dark portions of the background, nor will light
text on the light background.
• A background image is a separate file that your web page must
be able to find, just like making links to another web page. Be sure to make
a folder for your images (make it easy and call it "images")
inside of your web site folder and save all of your images here.
• You can make your own background or you can download one from
one of the many free background sites. {A quick way to find one is to just
run a Google search for
backgrounds, free, download.}
