In this step, we are going
to set up a web site. This is not an Internet web site (yet), but a
web site that is on your computer. This is called a Local Site.
Important
Notes on Sites and File Organization
Look at the image below to see how to start your new site:
As you see, you go to Site,
New Site and you will get a new window that looks like this:
This is the Site
Definition Window. You are simply going to tell Dreamweaver where
to find your files and where to store them.
•On the first Site Definition Window, give your site a name
(DW Basics for this tutorial) and click Next.
•On the next window, click NO and then Next.
{If you are using server technologies, you can come help me write
these tutorials!}
•On the next window, choose Edit local copies
on my machine... This will let you create your site in the safety of your
own little computer. After you are done, then you can go put your site
on the Internet.
Also on this window, it asks you where you want to store your
files. You will want to click the yellow folder to browse
to the folder that you have created for your site (DW Basics
for this tutorial). Click Next.
•On the next window, you'll want to choose Local/Network
for the remote server and then browse again to your web site folder
(DW Basics for this tutorial). Also, be sure that the box next
to Refresh Files Automatically is checked. Click Next.
•On the next window, click NO. You will not need
to enable check out because you will be working off of your computer,
not a folder on a server that is being shared by other users. Click Next.
•The next window will show you the settings you chose for your site.
If you see that you made a mistake, you can use the Back
button to go back and change it. If everything looks ok, you can click
Done.
When you have
finished defining your site, it will show up in the site window at the
right of your screen.
You are ready to start your new web page!
