Cleaning up your computer is very important for the continued health of your computer (and you)! Your computer doesn't have a little warning light on it like a car (I've been told that's what those blinking things are on my dashboard). It won't warn you that it is tired and overworked -- it will just die, taking all of your files with it!
To avoid such unpleasant things, it is a good habit to periodically back-up your important files and clean up your computer.

  • First, if you have documents, pictures, music and/or folders you want to keep that are on your desktop or on your hard drive move them to your home directory (your-name on eisd-something (H:)) or save them to another source (like a CD or Floppy). You can also delete them!:

Click on your home directory folder on your desktop and resize that screen so you can see your directory and your documents side by side.

Right Click on the document/folder/picture you want to move, hold and drag it into your directory. Release the right click and click on Move Here. You're done.

If you decide to delete documents don't forget to empty your recycle bin!

And while you are in your directory see if there is anything you don't need anymore and delete those as well.
  • Second, empty your cookies and temporary internet files from Internet Explorer. If you do not know how to do this, here are some instructions:
Click on Start
...Programs
...Accessories
...System Tools
...Disk Cleanup

Select drive (C:). Then click OK.

The following screen shows you how much space will be freed by deleting items in a file. If there is a number to the right of the corresponding file click in the box on the left to delete those items; then click OK.

You're done!

Oh...and two more things. If you have any unauthorized programs, games, etc. installed on either your hard drive or saved to your home directory please uninstall them. In Outlook Express, if you have email in your inbox, deleted folder or sent folders and don't absolutely for sure need them, delete them as well.
