Audacity: Importing Files

There are 2 basic ways to import sound files into Audacity:
1. Importing from a saved file (MP3, Ogg Vorbis or WAV)
2. Recording from a source (CD, DVD, microphone, etc.)

Importing audio from a saved file

  1. Go to Project > Import Audio

NOTE: Although "Import MIDI" is a choice, Audacity will not play, edit or save MIDI files.
  2. Browse to where you have your file saved and open the file.

Quick Hint: If you have several files that you would like to add to the same project you can open them all at one time by holding down the control (Ctrl) key and selecting them.

Recording audio from a source

  1. Choose your source from the Mixer toolbar.
Quick Hint: Use a stereo-to-stereo cable to connect a portable cd/tape player's headphone jack to your computer's mic jack to record from CD or tape (or even radio!!)

  2. Click the Record button from the Control Toolbar.
  3. Start your source (CD, mic, etc.)

Quick Hint: You may want to hit the Pause button before the Record button so that you can have a little more control over when you actually start recording.
