1. Download the Audacity installer
from the Audacity
web site (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)
Go for the 1.2.4b version of Audacity. At
the time this tutorial was created, the 1.3 version
is a beta release (unstable version). Please check
the Audacity site for updates.
2. Be sure to also download the LAME MP3 encoder library, too. You must have this to create MP3 files with Audacity. There are other plug-in files that you can download, but we won't use them in this tutorial.
3. Run the Audacity installer (a simple install).
4. Unzip the LAME file.
Put the folder for LAME inside the Audacity folder
(which is created when you install Audacity).
Note: There is no reason that you must place
the LAME folder inside the Audacity folder --
it just helps keep your files organized in one
area.
5. Run Audacity. On the first run, it will ask what language you want to use.
6. Set up the LAME library:
Go to Edit > Preferences.
Choose the File Formats
tab.
Click Find Library (in
the MP3 Export Setup section).
A window will appear explaining why you have to
do all of this and asking if you want to locate
the file now. Click Yes.
Browse to the LAME folder and find the lame_enc.dll
file. Now you are set up to export to MP3.
